Background of the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership

The Arizona Center for Civic Leadership was created in 2010 via a partnership between the Flinn Foundation and the Thomas R. Brown Foundations to fill a gap the two philanthropies identified in Arizona’s civic-leadership assets:

Although quality leadership-training organizations existed at the local and regional level, no entity existed to address civic-leadership statewide.

The Center strives to do just that.

Components of the Center

Administered by the Flinn Foundation under the direction of Flinn Foundation Vice President Nancy Welch, the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership has three core components:

• The Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy will develop future state leaders through a structured 12-seminar program, mentoring with established leaders, individual plans for involvement in statewide issues and institutions, and establishment of an alumni network. Two sessions per year are scheduled for competitively selected groups of Fellows.
• The Arizona Civic Leadership Collaborative will help local and regional programs and related organizations to develop and work together on a statewide agenda to expand and enhance civic leadership at all levels.
• A communication and outreach program will concentrate on working with others to increase awareness of civic engagement, involvement, and leadership throughout the state.

Additional civic-leadership resources

• For the first time, Arizona has a directory of local and regional nonpartisan civic-leadership training programs. This growing, map-based directory is available on the Center's website.
• The Center's regularly updated blog, the Civic Leadership Conversation, provides broad-based news about civic leadership in Arizona and beyond.
• The Center invites Arizonans to subscribe to the Center's email newsletter, Civic Leadership News, and to establish social-media connections on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Jumo, and ScribD.
• Website visitors may also browse a continuously growing selection of data, reports, and other civic-leadership resources.
